What is the difference between a direct entry and regionalized event?
As demand increases for high school positions at the Provincial Skills Canada Competition (PSCC), events become regionalized, requiring students to compete at one of our nine Regional Skills Canada Competitions (RSCC).
For the 2012 PSCC high school students must qualify at their RSCC in Auto Service, Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Culinary Arts, Hairstyling - Junior, Hairstyling - Intermediate, TV/Video Production and Welding.
A direct entry event does not require students to participate in a RSCC to qualify for PSCC. Teachers can directly register their students to participate in the PSCC. Registration for RSCC events opens at 8am, February 13, 2012. Registration for PSCC events opens at 8am, February 27, 2012.
Some regions host non-regionalized events, such as Baking, to provide additional opportunities for students to hone their skills. The gold medalist from non-regionalized events earn a position at the PSCC.
FAQ's
Why aren't all high school events offered at the regional level?
Our volunteers and regional coordinators make hosting skills events look easy, but each of our 90 regional contest areas require the management of a Regional Technical Committee, recruitment of judges, scope and project development, and facility and material sourcing. To ensure the long-term viability of the RSCC one to three regional events are added each year.
How does SCA decide which events are regionalized?
When registration opens for the PSCC, the SCA team monitors the activity of each of the contest areas to identify which contest areas are in most demand across the province. Regionalizing eight contest areas has dramatically reduced our waiting list for students wanting to compete in a Skills Canada competition and is a great way of bringing the Skills Movement to local communities.

How many students move on the PSCC from a regionalized event?
The number of students that qualify for the PSCC depends on the number of spots available provincially, the demand in the region and the size of the region. Each regional scope identifies how many students will qualify from that event for the PSCC.
