Volunteers Needed for Skills Exploration Days

Skills Exploration Day is our newest program developed to help introduce junior high students to design thinking and building an actual prototype!  Students will use real tools and materials related to 9 different skilled trade and technology careers (graphic design, painting and decorating, fashion technology, electrical installations, carpentry, cabinet making, plumbing, sheet metal and plumbing).

Benefits for you:

  • Free parking, lunch, and volunteer t-shirt
  • Try your hand at some of the different Learn-A-Skill stations and pick up a new skill
  • Be part of an exciting and fun day!

Roles:

    Welding Station Assistant

    Wednesday, November 8: 9:00 – 11:30 AM

Help students put on their welding gear – beanies, smocks, gloves.  You not only will make sure that no one lights themselves of fire but also be the gate keeper to the welding booths.

    Cut and Saw Station
Tuesday, November 7: 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM
Wednesday, November 8: 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM

Volunteers will supervise and aid students cutting different materials – from cardboard to pvc pipes.  Teach students how to properly cut using X-Acto knives, hack saws, scissors etc.

    Glue Station
Tuesday, November 7: 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM
Wednesday, November 8: 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM

Crafty volunteers are encouraged to apply! Volunteers will supervise and aid students who will be using hot glue guns to assemble their prototype.  Help prevent the burn!

    Pantry and Reuse Centre

Wednesday, November 8:  11:00 AM to 2:30 PM

Be part of the action and be part of one of the main hubs of our event. These volunteers will help exchange and distribute materials to be used in the students’ prototypes.  Inspire creativity and help students overcome their fear of using real construction materials at one of the Learn-A-Skill stations.

    Learn-A-Skill Station Volunteer:
Tuesday, November 7: 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM
Wednesday, November 8: 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM

We have nine learn a skill stations that you could be a part of: Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Electrical Installations, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Painting & Decorating, Plumbing, Sheet Metal and Welding.

Do you have a particular skill in one of those areas and would like to help inspire students? We will pair you up with our experts to help and guide the students at that particular station.

Come out for one or both days! If you are interested in volunteering for Skills Exploration Days, contact Katherine Kupchenko, Event & Registration Coordinator with your availability and preferred role at KatherineK@SkillsAlberta.com.
