First Recipient of the Terry Cooke Legacy of Skilled Excellence Scholarship, Dane Schmidt!

We launched a new scholarship this year, the Terry Cooke Legacy of Skilled Excellence Scholarship. It will be awarded annually to the top scoring secondary student on Team Alberta at the Skills Canada National Competition. The recipient will receive $5000 per year to support post-secondary studies.

The first recipient of this scholarship is Dane Schmidt! Who was awarded gold in welding secondary and was also awarded the RBC Best of Region award for having the overall highest Z-score. Congratulations to Dane for winning this scholarship and being the first to receive it!

Dane shared: “Receiving this scholarship is truly an honour, and I’m beyond grateful. This incredible support will help me pursue my career in welding. I couldn’t have achieved any of this without the guidance and support of my mentors and instructors here at St. Joseph High School, and at Red Deer Polytechnic”.

From the Cooke family: “Terry always believed in doing things you are passionate about, which is what brought him to the Skills movement in the first place. As a family, we are so excited to see the inaugural announcement of the student that will receive this award. We hope it makes it a bit easier for them to follow their passion in the future!”
