WorldSkills

Every two years the WorldSkills competition brings together the most talented young people in the trades and technologies. These competitors have a chance to compete against their peers from around the globe, putting their skills to the test and representing their country and their institute on the global stage.

WorldSkills 2026 will be hosted in Shanghai, China.

Skills Canada Alberta is incredibly proud to have 12 competitors who have qualified for Team Canada.

Benjamin Jamison – Aerospace Technology

Aerospace Technology is where precision meets performance. Competitors inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot aircraft systems and components, ensuring every detail meets strict aviation safety standards. Learn more about Aerospace Technology here.

For Benjamin Jamison, Aerospace Technology represents the career he has always dreamed of pursuing. His passion for aviation began at a young age, and discovering Aircraft Maintenance Engineering confirmed the path he wanted to follow. Through his Skills experience, Benjamin has built meaningful industry connections and even secured a position with his dream employer. As he prepares to compete, he is proud to stand alongside others who share the same passion and dedication to the aviation industry.

Carter Kokot – Automobile Technology

For Carter Kokot, a passion for the automotive trade is driven by the challenge of solving problems and working with his hands every day. His three-year journey with Skills has helped him grow his technical abilities, opened doors to new opportunities, and prepared him to compete at the highest level. As he gets ready for the international stage, Carter is excited to test his skills, connect with competitors from around the world, and experience the global automotive industry firsthand.

Tate McGarry – Cabinet Making

Cabinet Making blends creativity, precision, and craftsmanship. Competitors transform raw materials into detailed, functional pieces by measuring, cutting, assembling, and finishing with accuracy and care. Learn more about Cabinet Making here.

Tate McGarry’s passion for woodworking began long before his training at SAIT, where he refined his skills and discovered his competitive drive. After first competing in Carpentry, he found his true fit in Cabinet Making, a trade that allows him to combine creativity, precision, and problem solving. His Skills journey has pushed him to learn new techniques, take on challenging projects, and earn a place on Team Canada. As he prepares to compete internationally, Tate is excited to test his abilities against top competitors from around the world and represent Canada on the global stage.

Anika Jones – Car Painting

Car Painting combines technical skill with artistic precision. Competitors prepare surfaces, match colors, and apply finishes that meet exact industry standards for quality and appearance. With careful attention to detail and a steady hand, their work restores, protects, and transforms vehicles with a flawless finish. Learn more about Car Painting here.

Anika Jones discovered her passion for automotive refinishing at NAIT, where her creativity and love of cars came together in the world of Car Painting. Drawn to the balance of artistry and precision, she found a trade that allows her creative instincts to shine while developing strong technical skills. After competing twice at the provincial level and earning gold on her second attempt, Anika advanced to the national stage and secured her place on Team Canada. Through Skills, she has expanded her knowledge, built confidence, and pushed beyond her comfort zone as she prepares to take her craft to the world stage.

I competed at Skills in 2013, and since my introduction to the Skills community, I have been eager to give back and become involved. I have led both the Provincial and National Technical Committees and made my first attempt at Expert in 2019 in Kazan.” – Cecile Bukmeier

Logan Peters – Carpentry

Carpentry combines precision, planning, and craftsmanship to bring structures to life. Competitors interpret drawings, measure and cut materials, and assemble detailed projects with accuracy and efficiency. Learn more about Carpentry here.

Logan Peters discovered his passion for carpentry in Grade 11, where his interest in the trade first connected with the excitement of competition. He continued to build his skills through post secondary training and advanced to compete at the national level. After the competition, Logan was surprised to learn he had earned a place on Team Canada. His journey is especially meaningful as Carpentry returns to the WorldSkills stage for Canada. Through Skills, Logan has embraced new challenges, gained valuable travel experiences, and is proud to represent his trade and country as he prepares for international competition.

This is the second year of training competitors for me. One of my coworkers asked if I would be willing to train competitors and I agreed. I do enjoy training and being able to pass on different knowledge and be there to bounce ideas and questions off of.” – David Jones

Jacob McClelland – CNC Machining

CNC Machining blends precision, technology, and craftsmanship. Competitors program and operate advanced milling machines to transform raw blocks of metal into highly detailed, functional components. With exact measurements and tight tolerances, their work demands discipline, focus, and a commitment to producing parts that meet the highest industry standards. Learn more about CNC Machining here.

Jacob McClelland was drawn to CNC Machining by the balance of creativity, problem solving, and technical precision the trade demands. Inspired by the idea that the small components he creates can play a role in major projects, including advanced technologies and aerospace applications, Jacob has embraced every opportunity to grow. After two years of competing in Skills competitions, his dedication and drive earned him a place on Team Canada. Supported by his WorldSkills Canada Expert, Jurgen Hierholzer, and his Trainer, Tim Wong, Jacob continues to refine his technique and push his limits as he prepares to compete on the world stage.

Keegan Sturge – Electrical Installations

Electrical Installations combines technical knowledge, precision, and problem solving to bring power systems to life. Competitors install, test, and troubleshoot electrical wiring and equipment while following strict safety codes and industry standards. Learn more about Electrical Installations here.

Keegan Sturge, from Fort McMurray, is making history as the first competitor from his community to represent Canada at WorldSkills. His journey began in high school and continued at Keyano College, where he steadily built his skills, confidence, and competitive drive. Since 2022, Keegan has progressed through Skills Canada Alberta competitions, each experience preparing him for the next level. Through Skills, he has gained valuable opportunities, strong industry connections, and the chance to grow alongside others who share his passion. Supported by his Trainer, Dawn Ohama, and WorldSkills Canada Expert, Jason Taylor, Keegan is now preparing to compete among the best in the world.

We’ve been training together for four years, and what sets him apart is his commitment to showing up, putting in the time, and never shying away from a challenge. His reliability and eagerness to learn make him a standout — during the 2024 provincial prep, while our community was under wildfire evacuation alert, he packed tools and training materials to stay ready.” – Dawn Ohama

I am a passionate RSE-skilled trades advocate, educator, and aspiring youth mentor. As an RSE electrician, I am proud of my journey, and I am passionate about helping others find theirs. I have taught apprenticeship programming, foundational level training, and outreach into K-12 classrooms for many years. I also work with a not-for-profit training society that helps promote trades careers. Additionally, I have studied education, and the opportunity to apply the concepts in reality was unbelievable.” – Jason Taylor

Luke Emeny – Heavy Vehicle Technology

Heavy Vehicle Technology focuses on the inspection, maintenance, and repair of large and complex equipment such as trucks, buses, and heavy duty machinery. Luke Emeny’s journey in Heavy Vehicle Technology has been driven by a desire to keep learning and take on new challenges. After gaining valuable experience through Skills competitions, his performance at the national level helped prepare him for the next step on the international stage. What began as a leap outside his comfort zone has grown into an opportunity to represent Canada at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026. Through the experience, Luke has built strong connections, developed his skills, and is excited to meet competitors from around the world while continuing to push himself to grow in the trade.

Back in 2001, I was the Canadian competitor for automobile technology in the WorldSkills competition held in Seoul, South Korea. Over the years, I’ve assisted in different aspects of Skills, and becoming a trainer seemed like a good fit. Tyler Gunther – Industrial Mechanics/Millwright

Industrial Mechanics/Millwright involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of complex industrial machinery and mechanical systems. Competitors align equipment, troubleshoot issues, and ensure machines operate safely and efficiently. Learn more about Industrial Mechanics/Millwright here.

Tyler Gunther discovered his passion for the mechanical world at SAIT, where his dedication and focus quickly set him apart. In his very first year competing in Skills, his talent and determination carried him all the way to a gold medal and a place on Team Canada. Through the experience, Tyler has expanded his technical knowledge, refined his skills, and embraced the opportunity to grow alongside expert mentors. Supported by his WorldSkills Canada Expert, Mohamed Flyes, and Trainer, Jason Parnell, he is now preparing to represent Canada and take on the challenge of competing against the best in the world.

My journey in Skills competitions started in my career when I participated as a trainer on 2016. That experience gave me a deep appreciation for the level of technical skill, precision, and mental focus required to compete on a higher level. Through competitions, I not only honed my own abilities but also learned the value of teamwork, discipline, and continuous improvement. After coaching, I transitioned into mentoring and expert roles in 2024 in Lyon and 2026 in Shanghai.” – Mohamed Flyes

Kylar Bloomberg – Plumbing

Plumbing combines technical knowledge, precision, and problem solving to install and maintain essential water, drainage, and heating systems. Competitors work with a variety of materials and tools to build systems that are safe, efficient, and built to code. Learn more about Plumbing here.

Kylar Bloomberg’s journey in Plumbing has been shaped by strong mentorship, consistent training, and a drive to keep improving. Studying at Lethbridge Polytechnic, he has built his skills through multiple Skills competitions, earning podium finishes at the national level two years in a row. Guided by his Trainer, Justin Fisher, a former WorldSkills competitor, and supported by his WorldSkills Canada Expert, Kylar continues to expand his knowledge and refine his technique. As he prepares for WorldSkills Shanghai, he is focused on learning new methods, exploring different tools and techniques, and representing Canada at the highest level.

In the competition it can become intense very quickly, but he has this level-headed approach that keeps him focused and consistent from start to finish. Cooper Ross – Web Technologies

Web Technologies combines creativity and technical skill to design and build responsive, user friendly websites and applications. Competitors develop and code digital experiences that are functional, accessible, and visually engaging. Learn more about Web Design and Development here.

Cooper Ross discovered his passion for web development while attending Ernest Manning High School and at home, where he built many of his skills through self directed learning and hands on practice. His growth through Skills competitions reflects both his dedication and his drive to improve with each experience. What began as a learning opportunity has grown into a chance to represent Canada on the world stage. Along the way, Cooper has found not only technical growth but also a strong sense of community, building friendships and connections that extend beyond competition as he prepares for WorldSkills Shanghai.

The number of competitors I have met operating at Cooper’s level, I can count on one hand. It really comes down to how much time you spend studying, and practicing, and doing. In his spare time he is taking on projects more challenging than the scope of the competition so far. Cooper is clearly self motivated, and passionate about programming, and that’s going to take him far.” – Matt Waggoner

I have been a volunteer with Skills Canada since 2014 starting as a Provincial Technical Committee member and then joined the National Technical Committee in 2016. In 2019, I joined Team Canada as the WorldSkills expert in Russia. I have enjoyed all aspects of helping young people excel in our competitions and to get the most from it. I want to help our Canadian competitor prepare for the competition in Shanghai and to support them at the competition itself in any way that I can. It is an amazing experience to see these competitors at all levels of competition.” – David Cantwell

Lucas Stang – Welding

Welding combines technical precision and craftsmanship to join and shape metal components used in everything from infrastructure to advanced manufacturing. Competitors perform a variety of welding processes while meeting strict quality standards for strength, accuracy, and appearance. Learn more about Welding here.

Lucas Stang began his Skills journey at Red Deer Polytechnic, where his trainer encouraged him to take his training beyond the classroom and into competition. Through dedication, practice, and a strong focus on improving his technique, Lucas progressed from his first competition to earning gold at both the provincial and national levels. Supported by his WorldSkills Canada Expert, Ken Heather, and Trainer, Lee Yasinski, he continues to refine his skills and push his craft further. Now, Lucas is preparing to represent Canada in Shanghai and showcase his passion for welding on the world stage.
